Buckingham Palace disclosed on Monday evening (February 5) that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer.
The revelation emerged during his recent treatment for a benign enlarged prostate.

While the specific type of cancer afflicting the King remains undisclosed by the Palace, the announcement has triggered an outpouring of sympathy and well-wishes from across the nation, including Torbay.

In response to the diagnosis, King Charles III has taken the decision to defer some of his public obligations, yet remains steadfast in his commitment to fulfilling state duties.

Notably, he will maintain his weekly meetings with the Prime Minister.

Cllr David Thomas, leader of Torbay Council, expressed his sentiments on behalf of the local community, saying, "I'm sure he will be facing his treatment with the positivity and strength of character which have been evident throughout his public life."

Cllr Thomas commended the King's transparency in sharing his diagnosis, recognising its potential to eliminate speculation and gain a greater understanding of cancer's impact on individuals worldwide.

Cllr Katya Maddison, Leader of Prosper Torbay, added her perspective, noting, “I think the country has belatedly come to value the King’s qualities a great deal - including his willingness to speak up, even when others deride him. He’s clearly a man of principle and they seem to be in short supply, so if you need a reason for wishing him a quick recovery that would be a good one. Let’s give him the privacy he needs for his convalescence.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak echoed sentiments of gratitude, acknowledging the importance of early detection in tackling the illness. Assuring the public of his ongoing support, Mr Sunak shared that he remains in regular contact with the King.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Prince Harry's return from the United States of America landed him at Heathrow Airport at lunchtime today (February 6). His arrival coincides with the news of his Father's diagnosis.

As the nation awaits further updates on King Charles III's health, the reaction from all over the world has shared hope for his swift recovery.
