A Torquay hotel has been all-but destroyed in a fire which may have been started deliberately

The once-grand Coppice Hotel is nothing more than a blackened shell.
Just a few years ago the hotel was boasting four-star status with luxury rooms, gardens and swimming pool.
But the hotel was virtually gutted in a major fire last week with the old Victorian villa left with no roof, smashed windows and blackened walls.
The derelict hotel, just off the main Babbacombe Road, was engulfed in flames which shot high into the sky on Wednesday night.

Roads around the hotel were closed off by police after the alert was sounded just before 9pm.
People were asked to stay away as fire crews battled the inferno.
It is understood that local residents had reported seeing individuals, possibly squatters, inside the property but it was empty and nobody was hurt when the fire broke out.
The fire service received reports of smoke coming from the derelict building on Barrington Road at 8.40pm.
Initially one appliance from Torquay and one from Paignton were mobilised.

A Devon and Somerset fire service spokesman said: "On arrival the building was well alight, with all three floors involved in fire and additional crews were mobilised to assist. In total, six fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms, a water carrier, a welfare unit, and an incident command unit were used on site. Crews used two hose reel jets, two main jets, a thermal imaging camera, a triple extension ladder and a drone to tackle the fire. At 3.44am the incident response was scaled back and by 5am the fire was extinguished."

Seventy per cent of the building was destroyed by fire. The cause is being investigated by the fire service and Devon and Cornwall Police. The fire may have been started deliberately.
