Flames engulf the former Coppice Hotel

Major fire breaks out at former Torquay hotel

Firefighters were battling a major fire at a former hotel in Torquay tonight.

The now derelict Coppice Hotel in Babbacombe was engulfed in flames

Roads around the hotel, located off the main Babbacombe Road and just up the road from the former Palace Hotel site, were closed off by police after the alert was sounded.

By 9pm at least six fire engines were at the scene as well as two aerial appliances.

It is understood the building was empty when the fire broke out.

People were asked to stay away from the area as crews tackled flames shooting into the night sky.

Devon Fire and Rescue confirmed on social media that they had six pumps and two aerial platforms along with supporting units at the large derelict hotel fire. Their message was: "Please avoid the area. Road closures are in place. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed."
