Torquay United and Dover players pay tribute
Fans and footballers at Torquay United in poignant tribute to tragedy dad and son
Fans and footballers at Torquay United today paid a special and poignant tribute to a tragic dad and his young son found dead together.
The bodies of Kenneth Battersby and two-year-old Bronson were discovered alongside each other at a flat in Skegness.
Mr Battersby, 60, has been pictured wearing a Torquay United supporter's shirt and now it has been revealed he was an avid Gulls' fan.
A minute's silence to remember the father and son was held before United's game against Dover Athletic at Plainmoor this afternoon.
A statement on United's Facebook page said: "Everybody at Torquay United AFC, like the rest of the country, were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Kenneth Battersby and his two-year old son Bronson this week.
"Although based in Lincolnshire, Kenneth was a long-time supporter of the club, and therefore, the club has decided to hold a minute of remembrance in their honour ahead of our match against Dover Athletic on Saturday.
"The thoughts of everyone here at Plainmoor goes out to all of the Battersby family, and their friends, at this very difficult time."
The father and son were found in a flat in Skegness on January 9. It is thought that Bronson starved to death after Mr Battersby had a heart attack.
Players from both United and Dover stood around the Plainmoor centre circle for the minute's tribute. Fans around the ground stood in silence which was ended by the referee's whistle signalling united applause from supporters.
Lincolnshire County Council has now launched an inquiry into the tragedy. A spokeswoman for Lincolnshire Police, has said: "Investigations have been carried out and the deaths are not being treated as suspicious. The matter has been passed to the coroner’s office.”
