Community matters in Paignton

We’ve just about survived another year, haven’t we?
And I feel there is something rather cleansing about January.
I don’t make New Year resolutions (we all know what happens to those!), but I always like a bit of a mental clear out as a new year begins because it’s a great time to create healthy new habits and one of mine is to be more creative.
Luckily there are LOADS of opportunities in Paignton and around the rest of our bay.
The Yarnia Knitting and Crochet Circle at Paignton Library (2.30pm - 4.30pm Thursdays), is now in the diary because I’m desperate to know how to crochet those beautiful ‘granny’ squares to make a colourful blanket.
The Crafty Chatters group is also there in the café every third Tuesday of the month 10am – 12am and the Cabbage Patch Crafters are at Southfield Christian Centre on Cecil Road, second and fourth Tuesdays every month 2.30pm – 4.30pm.
And there’s the free Thrive Project’s Art Group, Fridays 11am - 1pm, 44 Totnes Road near the mermaid sculpture.
I also want to give you a quick update on the Winner Street Artists & Makers studio and workshop idea that I hope will become part of the project to make this lovely street our very own quirky, artisan destination space.
Our group of artists and makers are getting together towards the end of January to discuss how they’d like to take the idea forward. Do contact me if you’re an artist or maker and want to be involved.
Lastly, the Paignton Community Partnership Steering Group plans to organise some ‘quick win’ projects in Paignton Town in 2024 to make it look its best.
We have a beautiful town that has suffered from a lack of attention and we are determined to work with Torbay Council to put that right.
If you are a doer and want to get involved with your Paignton community then get in touch. Let’s make 2024 the year that puts Paignton on the map in a really positive way.
NB: Leah and Jo’s Paignton Library drop in, 1pm - 2.30pm, is on Tuesday, January 23.
Leah can be contacted via email – leahwhitcher@torbaycdt.org.uk or by phone 07703 715235.
