New Year hopes for football in Brixham
Brixham AFC should go into this Saturday’s Toolstation Western League game at Ilfracombe Town well rested after a short break following their exciting 2-2 Boxing Day derby draw with Buckland Athletic.
The Fishermen’s scheduled league match at St Blazey at the weekend was called off because the Blaise Park pitch was waterlogged.
There’s an important spell ahead for Brixham (7th) - after Ilfracombe away, they travel to West London for the Fourth Round of the Isuzu FA Vase against North Greenford United on January 13 and then home to league rivals Street seven days later.
The festive derby against local rivals Buckland had a rousing finish.
Despite Scott Robinson’s goal midway through the first half, it looked as if two by ex-Torquay United forward Jared Lewington would give Athletic victory.
That was until Ewan Howarth hit the equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage-time, to the delight of most of the 363 crowd.
Torquay United’s Women return after several weeks without a game when they travel to Portsmouth to meet Moneyfields on Sunday in the National League Division One SW.
Staying up after promotion last year is still the aim, and the Gulls go to Hampshire just outside the drop zone. United’s Under-18s also resume after their festive break this Saturday, against Mangotsfield United at South Devon College (10.30am).
Kevin Wills’ side, defending the SW Counties Youth League title, are still six points behind leaders Bridgwater United, but they have three games in hand.
