'Ultimate luxury' at heart of new Redcliffe plans

The new owners of Paignton Redcliffe Hotel hope to see in the New Year with an 'ultimate luxury' touch to their seafront premises.
Detailed plans for a huge redevelopment of the landmark hotel have been filed.
Owners the Tudor Hotels Collection, which is also behind the recent development of the famous Bodmin Jail Hotel, have promised to transform the 150-year-old Redcliffe into the ’ultimate celebration of luxury’.
Now they have filed their official application with Torbay Council’s planning department to start the work. The application will now go before the planning committee for a decision.
The number of guest rooms would be cut from 67 to 55, with the ground floor function room converted into guest rooms. There will be a new restaurant/bar and enhanced spa facilities, hotel bar and hotel dining.
Drawings supplied by Tudor Hotels show the Redcliffe, which has dominated the seafront between Paignton and Preston since it was first built in the mid-nineteenth century, transformed while retaining much of its unique ‘eccentric’ design.
It was first used as a hotel in 1902 and was sold recently after being owned by the same local family for more than 40 years. Its architecture has Indian and Italian influences, and the building as a whole is Grade II listed.
More recent extensions mean some of its original wings no longer exist, but the new plans aim to make more of the building’s central ‘rotunda’.
Tudor Hotels say the redevelopment will “elevate the guest experience to new heights.” The interior of the hotel will be “revitalised,” to blend contemporary design with “timeless elegance.”

Tudor Hotels says it will minimise disruption to guests while the project goes on, and the hotel will continue to operate.
The plans include reinstating towers and ornamental ‘onions’ at the corners. There will be a new parapet, new windows and repairs to some of the building’s facades.
