Brixham win at Ivybridge
Latest from Devon rugby
A convincing away victory over Ivybridge has restored that winning feeling for Brixham’s 1st XV ahead of another key home match this Saturday.
The Fishermen were favourites at lowly Ivybridge and duly won 42-25 to keep themselves on the fringe of the Tribute South West Regional One promotion race.
Brixham (20pts) are still eleven points behind leaders Chew Valley – they’re still the only side to beat the men from Avon – but this weekend they welcome second-placed Launceston (29) to Astley Park.
Tries by Harry Rodwell, Mitch Pinkus (2), Matt Crosscombe, Jordan Green (2) and Joel Ashworth sealed a bonus point at Ivybridge, with ‘extras’ from the boot of Pinkus.
It’s likely to be a real test against Launceston – the Cornishmen halted Barnstaple’s winning run with a 20-17 victory at Polson Bridge on Saturday.
There were defeats for Newton Abbot and Teignmouth in Regional Two.
The All Whites’ 29-59 loss to Crediton at Rackerhayes was not a shock, but Teignmouth pushed joint leaders Wadebridge Camels all the way before going down 18-22 at Bitton Park.
Only three points cover the top six sides in Reg Two, led by Wadebridge, Crediton and Sidmouth all on 29pts.
Paignton continued their upbeat season by hammering Falmouth 59-19 at Queen’s Park in Western West division.
The Cherries ran in tries by Tom Osborne (3), Dewald Stoop, Jack Linley-Shaw, Jack Carlisle and David Siddall, with more points from Brad McKee off the tee.
They’re in sixth place ahead of a trip to Kingsbridge, who are the new leaders, thanks to a 32-10 win over Bude at High House and the abandonment of the Plymstock Albion Oaks v Tiverton game because of an injury to the referee.
Torquay Athletic’s 100% start to the Counties Two Devon season is finally over. The Tics were edged 14-17 against chasers Barnstaple 2nds at Pottington Road.
Torquay, who meet South Molton at the Recreation Ground this Saturday, still lead, but they’re now two points ahead of Devonport Services and four in front of Barnstaple.
Other results: Cos Three SW – Brixham II 21 Paignton II 18, Tavistock II 31 Totnes 15, Torquay Ath II 0 Dartmouth 71.
