More than 800 ‘new’ fans helped to make Torquay United’s latest Community Day a big success against Welling United on Saturday.
Plainmoor’s Babbacombe Away End was filled with extra supporters who had taken advantage of the Gulls’ free-ticket offer to local clubs and organisations.
They swelled the gate to more than 2,500 and were rewarded with a 5-1 home victory.
United Supporters’ Liaison Officer Dominic Mee said: “Saturday’s match was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved, and to win 5-1 made the afternoon even more special!
“It was fantastic to see so many local grassroots and community groups taking advantage of the offer, and the Club would like to extend its thanks to South Devon College for sponsoring this initiative.
“This is further evidence of our superb partnership with the College, and Saturday was the perfect example of the fantastic results we can achieve when we work together.”
Torquay will hope that plenty of the ‘visitors’ will be back, especially as back-to-back league and FA Cup defeats to Maidstone United had helped to reduce the paying gate to around 1,700 including season-ticket holders.
The Gulls usually hold two Community Days each season, so they’re expected to announce another date in the New Year.
