The historic Paignton Picture House is hosting a major multimedia installation inside its iconic auditorium that reflects the layered history of the building and the stories held within its walls.
Through decades of layered wallpaper, original 1914 mosaic flooring, peeling acrylic paint, the cracks, crevices, light, shadows and a century of dust – it all holds a story.
Artist-in-residence Kelly Bryant’s work Screen Future Memoir utilises found materials, surfaces and textures from the building’s unique architecture, combined with original music, stories, images and sounds collected locally by young producers from Sound Communities, and brings them together through an immersive 3D sculptural screen for audiences to enter and experience.
Audiences can sit inside the Screen Future Memoir installation and have their images merged with the history of Paignton Picture House at a key moment in the life of this beloved landmark, just prior to the major regeneration project that aims to bring it back into public use.
Sound Designer Jonas Bjerketvedt – known for his work in Hip Hop culture and a pioneer of Norwegian speaking rap music and soundscapes – is working with the young producers from Sound Communities to design audio for the work, while sculptor Tony Weaver is creating the screen for the installation.
Screen Future Memoir opens to the public from October 20 to 22 with bookable time slots of 30-minutes duration.
