Gulls overpower Hungerford for 45 minutes
Manager Gary Johnson readily admitted his disappointment that his Torquay United side had not followed up a 5-0 half-time lead as they reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup against Hungerford Town.
The Gulls had the tie in the bag by the interval, care of goals by Jack Stobbs, Aaron Jarvis with two penalties, Brad Ash and Tom Lapslie.
But they failed to turn their domination into more goals in the second half and Johnson, who was 68 this week, said: “I knew my birthday was over when the second half got going.
“As pleased as I was with the first half, I wanted them to go out and do the same in the second half.
“We’re in the entertainment business, and I want the lads to entertain for 90 minutes.
“We didn’t go sloppy, but we didn’t look for the sixth and seventh goals enough, and that’s not being disrespectful to the opposition.
“It was half a performance, although that half was very good.
“Hungerford looked better in the second half, and that was a bit down to us.”
After Monday’s Cup draw, United face Maidstone United at home next Saturday and Johnson said: “They will be a tough cookie – slightly higher level than the game we played today.”
