Paignton Rowing Club
The 2023 South Coast Rowing Championships were held at Folkestone over an 1,800 metre course on the sea at Sandgate, 900 metres for Juniors
The regatta attracted 134 entries from the three Rowing Associations, Coast (Kent and Sussex), Hants & Dorset and the West of England (Devon, Cornwall and Somerset). This necessitated 30 highly competitive races. Conditions were challenging at times particularly during a spell when the wind was against tide and later when crews rowed against wind and tide.
Paignton Rowing Club played a major part in the representation of the West of England ARA producing some truly inspiring results.
In the Championship Men’s Junior/Senior coxed fours the crew of Ethan Frost, Rob Harris, Mike Lister and Yuri Allasia rowed to a credible fourth place. In the Championship Men’s Junior coxed fours the crew of Sam Brueton, Nick Brown, Ethan Frost and Yuri Allasia challenged the two leading crews down the course and finished a comfortable third.
In the Championship Ladies Junior coxed fours the crew of Isla Unwin, Freya Martin, Erin Mooney and Eva Birchell took sixth place but their previous race at Girls Under 16 coxed quadruple sculls had drained them.
In the Open Men’s Novice coxed fours the crew of Marcus Green, Sam Brueton, Hugo Dossett, Josh Bradley and cox, Eva Birchell, finished fourth with a strong push for third all the way to the course.
The club achieved two magnificent results in the Junior events with Marcus Green, Sam Brueton, Hugo Dossett, Josh Bradley and cox, Erin Mooney, finishing second on the stern of the winners and Freya Martin, Isla Unwin, Eva Birchell, Erin Mooney and cox, James Tookey, finishing second in a close race.
