Brixham v WSM
Brixham welcome a powerful Chew Valley
Brixham should know exactly where they stand in the Tribute South West Regional One promotion stakes this season after favourites and early leaders Chew Valley visit Astley Park this Saturday.
The Fishermen earned their first confidence boosting win of the campaign when they beat Weston-super-Mare 54-28 at home.
But Chew Valley, runners-up last season, have started with maximum points from their first three games and will give Brixham their biggest test so far, and possibly over the whole winter.
Brixham were always in charge against Weston, storming into a 26-0 lead well before half-time. Scrums were uncontested after the visitors ran out of props, and the scoring eventually saw a hat- trick of tries for in-form Bobby Wigginton, one each for Mitch Pinkus, Harry Rodwell, Jamie Hext, Matt Crosscombe and Joel Ashworth, with Pinkus adding seven conversions.
Chew, Devonport Services and Exmouth all have three wins under their belts.
In Regional Two, Newton Abbot picked themselves up from defeats by Teignmouth and Topsham to edge a 34-33 thriller against Truro at Rackerhayes. Teignmouth lost 13-28 at Sidmouth.
Paignton led Tavistock 24-15 at half-time in Counties One Western West, but couldn’t quite hold on in a 37-37 draw at Queen’s Park.
Dewald Stoop (2), Tom Osborne and Alex Pozniak crossed for the Cherries with Brad McKee kicking 14 extra points.
And Torquay Athletic are going very nicely at the top of Counties Two Devon after their latest victory, 31-10 at Honiton built on another strong first-half display.
Brixham 2nd XV, who were also in Devon Division last season, went down to Counties Three SW and so faced the Tics’ 2nds at the weekend – they won 72-5.
Other scores: Cos Three SW – Old Technicians 5 Dartmouth 22, Plymstock Albion Oaks II 75 Totnes 0; NE – Exeter Athletic 14 New Cross (Kingsteignton) 21, Okehampton II 26 Newton Abbot II 21, Teignmouth II w/o Torrington.
