Paignton Heritage Society believe in looking after history of the town

Paignton Heritage Society believe in looking after history of the town - even it means getting their hands dirty with a spot of weeding.
The society is a local group who are interested in the history of Paignton and want to preserve its heritage.
It meets monthly and has a speaker on a matter of local interest, followed by a cup of tea/coffee and a chance to chat to the speaker and to other members of the society.
The season of talks starts with well-known local Historian Kevin Dixon. The focus of Kevin’s talk will be Torbay Place Names and their origins. The talk will be held at Gerston Chapel in Torquay Road, Paignton, on September 21 at 7pm. Entry is £4 and everyone is welcome.
On October 7, the society has its annual Paignton Heritage Day. This will be at the Methodist Church Hall in Palace Avenue and entry is free with the event from 10am to 4pm . There will be a wealth of information and pictures of old Paignton. Two special exhibitions. The coming of the Railways and the changes that they brought to Paignton. A second exhibition will feature local people who were early emigrants to the New World.
The society's programme of events continue throughout the year with regular talks on matters of local interest.
A spokesman said: "We take a keen interest in all local historical matters including Oldway, the Picture House and the Coverdale Tower. We are responsible for keeping the excavation site in the corner of the Parish Churchyard clean and tidy with our special weeding party."
New members very welcome
