Midfielder McGavin making a big impression
In the space of five action-packed days, Torquay United's mercurial midfielder Brett McGavin has relaunched his own Plainmoor career and helped to galvanise the Gulls' National League South promotion hopes.
Manager Gary Johnson revealed that he'd taken McGavin, 23, out of the firing-line by naming him only as a sub in recent weeks.
He'd failed to win over some of the Gulls fans and even faced open criticism, despite the talent which persuaded Johnson to sign him from Ipswich Town in 2022, following an impressive season's loan at King's Lynn Town.
The pressure was on after United lost tamely at Aveley (1-2), and especially for McGavin when Johnson recalled him to the starting XI at home to Farnborough last Tuesday night.
Johnson even changed his formation to give McGavin the midfield 'anchor' role which suits him.
The tall schemer responded with a man-of-the-match performance in a 3-0 win, and he then followed up with a show-stopping goal-of-the-season contender in Saturday's key 2-1 stoppage-time victory over Chelmsford City.
Suffolk-born McGavin, whose father Steve enjoyed a fine career with Colchester, Birmingham and Wycombe, had admitted after the Farnborough win: "It hasn't been easy - I'd be the first to admit it - but they are loyal fans and they've stuck by me."
His 25-yard first-time hip-high volley just after half-time against Chelmsford raised the roof at Plainmoor, and he earned a standing ovation when Johnson withdrew him later in the match.
"I left Brett out for a little while, to let it all settle down," said Johnson, adding that he'd done the same thing when Armani Little and Jamie Reid were struggling for form in recent seasons.
"We all see his talent on the training ground every week. The quality in this group is good enough, but we keep telling them that you have to prove it on the stage - it's no good dying when you get to the concert.
"But anyone who hits the ball that high, and expects to score, has got it."
Johnson expects Chelmsford to rival Torquay for promotion, and they equalised (85mins) before another stoppage-time goal, an 'OG' from Will Jenkins Davies' free-kick, won it in the 93rd minute.
Six wins in seven games has forced United up to third place, a point behind surprise leaders Bath City.
But attention now turns to the FA Cup, and a potentially tricky Qualifying Round tie this Saturday away to Southern League Wimborne Town, managed by former Gulls promotion-winning centre-forward Tim Sills.
