Gulls 'step up' at the right moment

Gary Johnson reflects on a positive weekend

Manager Gary Johnson changed motivational tactics to help inspire his Torquay United side to a fourth successive victory and lift them up to fourth place in the National League South.
Forty-eight hours after reading the riot-act as the Gulls came from behind to win 2-1 at Slough Town, Johnson and his squad faced a similar situation as Braintree Town led 1-0 at half-time at Plainmoor on Monday.
Veteran boss Johnson, known for his occasional 'hair-dryer' outbursts, revealed: "On Saturday I felt I needed to tear into them - and you can see the ones who can accept that and play better.
"But today I was more calm with them, and Downesy (assistant Aaron Downes) was the 'bad cop'.
"Sometimes we try too hard to hit that unbelievable pass.
"We just needed to get on the ball and pass it to one of us. I thought in the second half we did that."
United, who are two points behind leaders Worthing after six games, fought back to beat Braintree with second-half goals by Jack Stobbs and 'another' stoppage-time' winner from Aaron Jarvis.
Centre-forward Jarvis, who had hit a late goal to beat Chippenham Town (2-1) in the previous home game, won and dispatched a 95th minute penalty to sink Braintree in front of a 2,543 Bank Holiday crowd.
"We all go through all the emotions in 90-odd minutes," said Johnson.
"The first half was not great. It was important that we had a few of our lads step up the plate and say 'I'm going to win this game' - I thought we had four or five, and that became six or seven.
"I'm pleased with the result, and I thank the fans for staying with us.
"If you're not in the lead, we all get frustrated. But we know that we can go to the very end.
"Of course we want to play better, and we still keep going and keep working to get the best out of this group.
"We are in a decent position after six games, but there's still 40-odd games to go and we've got some tough games coming up."
Over the next eleven days United travel to newly-promoted Essex side Aveley (5th) this Saturday and then entertain Farnborough and Chelmsford City (2nd), the only unbeaten team left in the division, over the course of next week.
