Farewell to Terry Manning, former mayor and councillor who loved his travels

Tributes are being paid to former civic Mayor and councillor Terry Manning, who has died at the age of 81.
The smart-dressed councillor proudly represented the people of Torbay for 12 years and was well known for his upholstery business, having trained as a tailor on the world famous Saville Row in his younger years.
He married his wife, Jan, in 2021 and she led the tributes, saying: “He grew up in Holloway in London and then moved down to Teignmouth. He originally trained as a Saville Row tailor and had an alteration shop in Teignmouth before deciding to set up his own business.
“Terry Manning Upholstery has become well known in the area and after he retired around five years ago, his son Paul and partner Anna took over the business.
“Terry was a councillor for 12 years, firstly with the Conservatives and then as an Independent. He represented the St Marys with Summercombe Ward and had quite a few positions within the council, including vice chairman of the licensing committee, vice chairman of the council and Mayor of Torbay.
“Terry was also President of the Brixham Conservative Club and part of the appeals committee and business management committee. Terry was that he was always approachable, people liked him and he stood up for what he believed in.
“Terry was diagnosed with prostate cancer around seven years ago and was told it had returned in January 2022, which was just two months before we got married. We met through a mutual friend and we just had a brilliant time together.
“We travelled around the world, visiting the Caribbean, Europe, India, Singapore, Thailand and just made the most of the time we had together. He didn’t have the time for much travelling in his early life and we just loved to explore the world.
“We crammed in as much as we could because I always knew Terry wanted to travel. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel in my life and I wanted him to experience the joy of travelling.”
