Senior practice pharmacists JJ and Jamie from Compass House Medical Centres in Brixham are on a mission to raise £10,000 for Torbay Hospital’s Breast Care Unit.
JJ will be cycling 1,000 miles on a static bike throughout the month with Jamie cycling a similar distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, setting off on Thursday August 31 and averaging a demanding 95 miles per day. Both will finish their epic challenges on Saturday September 9.
Last year, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s busy breast care unit saw 4,363 new patients and accommodated 7,307 follow up appointments. There are plans to redevelop the unit as part of a wider hospital development programme, and the funds raised by JJ and Jamie will enhance the environment for the people it cares for and their families.
Donna Egbeare, Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, said: “JJ and Jamie are aiming high with an ambitious fundraising target and we are really grateful for all their hard work and support.
“Our plans for the Breast Care Unit are part of the hospital’s wider redevelopment programme, to ensure a better experience for all of the patients who make their way through the unit each year.
“We look forward to working with JJ, Jamie and patients to improve the environment for everyone in the unit.”
JJ took on this challenge as a way of saying thank you for the care provided to patients by the team, and to help pay for improvements which can’t be funded through the NHS. He asks the local community to get behind his and Jamie’s challenge: “Please support our fundraising appeal by donating or by helping to spread the word far and wide, and help us to achieve something truly special for local patients.”
