Torbay Job Club
A new Job Club is being opened in Torbay
Riviera Life Church in Torquay has teamed up with Christians Against Poverty to help tackle poverty through unemployment in Torbay.
The club is being launched at the church on Thursday September 7 from 11am to 1pm.
A spokesman said: "At Riviera Life Church we continually see the distress and need of people who are in poverty and unemployment is one aspect of that. Therefore, we have teamed up with Christians Against Poverty to launch an exciting new venture.
Riviera Life Torbay Job Club Manager Sue Matthews said: "We know that for many people either finding a job for the first time or after a period of unemployment, for a variety of reasons, can be scary and maybe people are unsure how and where to start. At the Job Club we are here to give people confidence to recognise their strengths and how that can be translated into skills that an employer will be looking for. Being in work is more than just about money, it is also about socialisation and feeling good about yourself and what you can achieve.”
The Job Club is based in Torbay where in 2022 unemployment was three per cent compared to 2.6 per cent for the South West.
A CAP Job Club has three elements:
• Community time: giving people time to network, gain peer support and have ongoing access to Job Club Coaches for support and advice. This will be at its current Thursday drop-in/café from 10am to 2pm
• Steps to employment course: an 8-week course covering people’s motivations to go to work, the obstacles that may present, identifying strengths and how they can be translated onto a CV for employers and how to prepare for an interview. The first course starts on Tuesday September 19 from 10am to noon at the Riviera Life Church in Babbacombe Road.
• 1:1 Coaching: supporting people to identify their goals, strengths and writing CVs.
Sue said: "As this is a new venture, we are wanting to raise awareness of the Job Club and for people to either self-refer or for organisations that work with the unemployed to refer anyone who is interested in knowing more. I am happy to come to any organisation to give more information."
