Gulls celebrating PPAUK
Gulls looking to build a serious run of form
Despite morale-boosting back-to-back wins, manager Gary Johnson insists that his Torquay United side has found nowhere near top gear in their efforts to stamp themselves on the National League South promotion race.
The Gulls have responded to that 3-0 home defeat by Worthing by beating Chippenham Town at home (2-1) and last season's Play-Off Finalists St Albans City away (1-0) on Saturday, when young defender Ollie Tomlinson scored an important first goal for the club.
But Johnson, ahead of an August Bank Holiday double-header at Slough Town on Saturday and home to Braintree Town next Monday, stressed: "Two wins isn't a run. We still haven't found our proper form yet.
"We've done the job against Chippenham and St Albans, but 1-0 is too precarious, and I'm not saying that flippantly.
"The boys know that, as individuals, they haven't quite found the game that we saw in pre-season - I'm not sure where it went, by the way.
"The league hasn't settled down yet by a long way. There's certainly no team with maximum points even now.
"You don't want to be chasing at this stage, so it's important that we do put a few wins together and be as consistent as we can now."
Only one team, Chelmsford City, is unbeaten after just four games and they're fourth, a point ahead of United (10th).
Slough had lost three before they went to Weston-super-Mare, who had just won 6-2 at Bath City, on Saturday.
But, buoyed by new loan signing George Alexander from Bromley, Slough won 3-0 with an Alexander hat-trick, and they were already two up when Weston had a man sent off.
Even leaders Worthing, so impressive at Plainmoor, slipped up 2-1 at home to just-promoted Aveley.
Johnson was without five injured players at St Albans, including veterans Dean Moxey, Asa Hall and Kevin Dawson, last season's leading scorer Aaron Jarvis, and young full-back Finley Craske.
Johnson is hopeful that Jarvis, Moxey and Craske could all return this weekend, although Hall (ankle) and Dawson (hamstring) are longer-term absentees.
Slough's Arbour Park is an all-weather pitch, so United are switching training this week from their all-grass Seale Hayne complex near Newton Abbot to the similar 3G surface at Paignton's South Devon College.
