Torquay Bowls Club crowned champions
There was success for Torbay in the Bowls England National Finals at Leamington Spa
Torquay Bowls Club were victorious in the Tony Allcock Over 60’s Mixed Double Rink Trophy.
After victories over Bitton Park, Kings, Plymouth Sir Francis Drake and Crediton they travelled to Launceston to face last season's qualifiers Falmouth who they beat quite comfortably before disposing of Somerset winners Yeovil at Feniton. Then off to Leamington where they faced Gloucestershire side Cam Mills in the quarter final and Leicester BC in the semi final to set up a final against Old Coulsdon of Surrey who had emphatically defeated Norfolk Lions in the other semi fina.
Things couldn’t have got off to a worse start as after only four ends the local side were 17-1 down across the two rinks.
However, as they had done several times before Torquay dug deep and eventually triumphed on both rinks for a 42-38 overall victory and a thoroughly deserved national title which has not been seen at the Belgrave Road side for quite some years.
