Torquay United suffer painful defeat at home to Worthing
Manager Gary Johnson fully understood the reaction of a stunned Plainmoor crowd after Torquay United had lost their first home game of the season 3-0 to Worthing.
The Gulls were lucky not to lose by twice that margin, with goalkeeper Mark Halstead named as everyone’s Man of The Match in front of a 2,733 attendance.
“No one likes the stick that’s directed at us, but I agree with them,” said Johnson. “We’re the ones in charge, and we never gave our supporters anything on the day.
“We didn’t get anywhere what we’re after. Only a couple of people performed with any quality today.
“There’s been a few home truths spoken, everyone has had their say and we’re all disappointed.
“There’s some that didn’t perform at all, and we have to look at that, to see whether they can handle the better teams in the Conference South.
“We missed our busy players,” added Johnson, although one of them, Tom Lapslie, may be back for Tuesday’s home game against Chippenham Town.
“Two or three weren’t available, but it’s up to the other lads to perform and stake their claim to those places.
“Worthing played very well – if you don’t close them down, they will have a lot of possession and they were very good on the break.
“The fans will take some picking up, but everybody who will be here on Tuesday will be a real supporter, and we will want to do it for them.”
