Following his stellar amateur career, Torquay boxer Ben Andrews got off to a flying start in the professional ranks when featured on the under card of Lee McGregor’s unsuccessful World title contest televised live on Channel 5.
Despite having to travel to Edinburgh with only a handful of supporters to witness his debut, Ben clearly won three of the four rounds on referee Kevin McIntyre’s scorecard, piling up points by way of his solid jab against the vastly experienced Lancashire fighter Darryl Sharp. Sharp, a veteran of over 100 fights was the perfect opponent for Ben to dip his toes into big time professional boxing, as he fights in the southpaw stance, often a problem for novice pros.
Ben learned his trade with Torbay ABC based in Hele Road, Torquay, where he won numerous titles, including the England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2022 - Finals - Male Under 86kg and the 2022 Tri-Nations where he defeated Welsh champion and now unbeaten pro Aaron Bird. The 24 year old prospect was a pupil at nearby Cuthbert Mayne Secondary school and currently works as a fencer.
Now training at former pro champion Gareth Hogg’s Seven Hills gym and cornered by Plymouth fight figure Carl Goldsborough, Ben impressed the Wasserman Promotional outfit with whom he has signed a multi fight deal. Ben hopes to continue building his unbeaten record with a bout mooted for September and ideally a couple more contests before the end of the year.
