Burying the Rowcroft time capsule
Amazing memories for decades to come
A nurses uniform. An anniversary booklet. And an invitation to the opera.
Just a few of the 21 unusual items that were contained within a 40th anniversary year ‘time capsule’ that was deposited deep in the ground at Rowcroft Hospice on Monday, July 17.
Positioned almost 1m underground within Rowcroft’s 22-acre gardens in Avenue Road, Torquay, the time capsule aims to capture special memories of 2022, the hospice’s 40th anniversary year, and it’s hoped that the capsule will be dug up and appreciated by the community in decades to come. The idea for the capsule originated from Aimee Lambe, one of Rowcroft’s healthcare assistants in the charity’s Inpatient Unit.
“We’re so excited about the launch of our first-ever time capsule,” said Rowcroft Hospice CEO Mark Hawkins. “The capsule features a number of unique mementos and treasures from our celebratory 40th anniversary year, including stories and pictures of our amazing care over the 40 years highlighting the work of our wonderful staff and volunteers (some who are still with us from the start), newspaper cuttings, an anniversary photobook, posters, a pin badge, a nurse’s uniform, an anniversary mug and teatowel, hospice newsletters, an empty bottle of Rowcroft’s 40th anniversary non-alcoholic spirit, invitations to events such as an opera evening, and details of Rowcroft’s 40th anniversary MONOPOLY set.”
“The year 2022 was such a historic moment in the life of the hospice, so we wanted to record this special moment in time, and preserve these artifacts for generations to come,” said Sally Scott-Bryant, Rowcroft’s Chair of Trustees. “I’m sure the capsule and its contents will be of great historic interest to our community when it is discovered in the future!”
