Members of the Paignton Branch Royal British Legion have commemorated two major operations

Members of the Paignton Branch Royal British Legion have commemorated two major operations which occurred after the end of the Second World War but involved British and Commonwealth forces.
They stood in memory of those lost in the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960 and the Indonesian Confrontation between 1963 and 1966.
The Malayan Emergency lasted 12 years, three weeks and five days - a duration only exceeded by the troubles in Northern Ireland. Over that period 519 soldiers and 1,300 police were killed.
The insurgency was described as an 'emergency' because insurers would not have compensated plantation and mine owners if it had been labelled a 'war'.
The emergency ended in August 1960, following the Federation of Malaya’s independence in 1957.
The Borneo Confrontation started in April 1963, when the then president of Indonesia, authorised cross border incursions in to North Borneo.
Five Battalions of British and Gurkha troops were committed to defend a 1,000 mile long, jungle covered, mountainous frontier.
The Indonesian forces finally withdrew in October 1966 after signing a treaty with Malaysia in 1966. During the confrontation, 114 Commonwealth personnel were killed and a further 180 wounded.
