Norrms McNamara: Spreading dementia awareness across the globe

Dementia Aware

Dementia Aware

When we created the Purple Angel dementia awareness campaign, we had no idea it would actually travel to so many places around the world

You have heard about our Purple Angel towns and cities in the USA, the memory cafes, and all the ambassadors in so many different countries worldwide doing their own thing and how we have been recently joined by the Philippines.
I have to say Asia is a huge place to bring awareness to but as someone once said: "Every journey starts with a small step." And this is ours.
Thanks to the wonderful efforts of our South Asia Purple Angel ambassador Jill Arsenal, this has been created and is being circulated now all over Asia, and that's why I had to share - because the work continues, even though sometimes you don't hear about everything that goes on.
Jill wrote: "PA Global Dementia Alliance, a branch of the Purple Angel, was established under the visionary leadership of Norman McNamara, a resilient resident of Devon, UK.
"Diagnosed with dementia at the tender age of 50, Norman experienced first-hand the impact of societal misconceptions and discrimination towards individuals living with dementia.
"Motivated by a distressing encounter with a shopkeeper, he embarked on a mission to re-shape public perceptions and foster compassionate treatment for all.
"At the heart of Global Dementia Alliance's mission is the belief that every person, regardless of their cognitive abilities, deserves dignity, respect, and support.
"Operating in South East Asia with a strong presence in the Philippines, our organisation serves as a representative entity of the Purple Angel, unifying efforts across the region to raise awareness about dementia on a global scale.
"Our alliance embraces a multi-faceted approach to tackling the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by dementia. Through collaborative initiatives, advocacy campaigns, and community engagement, we strive to eradicate stigma and promote a more inclusive society.
"By nurturing understanding and empathy, we empower individuals living with dementia to lead fulfilling lives while supporting their families and caregivers. With a dedicated team of passionate professionals, we work tirelessly to spread awareness and knowledge about dementia, emphasizing the importance of early detection, timely intervention, and comprehensive care.
"Through educational programmes, training workshops and public forums, we equip communities, healthcare professionals and caregivers with the tools and resources necessary to provide compassionate and person-centered support.
"Global Dementia Alliance is proud to be part of the global movement of Purple Angel's global network of ambassadors dedicated to transforming the dementia landscape. By uniting with like-minded organisations and individuals, we amplify our collective voice, advocate for policy changes, and drive forward advancements in dementia research and care.
"Together, we strive to build a world that not only understands dementia but embraces those affected, fostering a society where everyone can thrive.
"Join us in our journey as we pave the way for a more inclusive, compassionate, and dementia-friendly world. Together, we can make a lasting impact, one step at a time."
Yes, people do ask me if I ever sit back and think about what we created right here in little old Torbay and my answer is always the same. Errr.... no! If I did it would frighten me to death!
Till next time...
