Prostate cancer testing at the Livermenad House Hotel in Torquay

Torbay Prostate Support Association, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Preston (Torbay), held a free prostate health awareness (PSA) testing event at the Livermead House Hotel in Torquay.

A total of 341 men from Torbay and the wider Devon area were tested and made aware of the support available from the TPSA.

Out of these, 27 men received red and amber letters encouraging them to discuss the results with their GP. Of that number, four were in their 40s and a further five in their 50s.

Demand out-stripped availability and another event is planned for November 8, once again, at the Livermead House Hotel.

TPSA were able to make this a free event due to the generous donations from various organisations and individuals during the year and donations made on the night.

This event proved extremely successful in raising awareness of prostate cancer and the local support TPSA can give men newly diagnosed or living with the disease, or their families.

Ian Nightingale, chairman of TPSA, said: "The continued support given by the Rotary Club of Preston (Torbay), both financially and marshalling of the event, has been tremendous. We certainly would not be able to have run this without them."

Rotarians revitalise gardens

The Acorn Centre, based at Lummaton Cross, Torquay, has for decades provided excellent facilities to the local community including badminton courts, five-a-side football, netball and a range of fitness classes.

There's also a fully equipped function room used for a range of activities including aerobics, dance, judo, karate, bingo and meetings.

However, the spacious garden had become rather ‘well worn’ and neglected over the years so a team of volunteers, led by Rory Levy of Torquay Rotary, decided to step in and revitalise the garden.

Torquay Rotarian Graham Doodson said: “It took a lot of work, but the results have been worth it. Now, anyone using the garden can enjoy a well-tended environment that's currently bursting with the signs of summer. As one regular user now describes the garden ‘It looks blooming lovely!’"
