A Torquay girls' football team finished second only to Manchester United in their group at the Premier League Primary Stars under-11s' National Girls Football Tournament.

The Year 5 and 6 girls' team from Sherwell Valley Primary School, Torquay, travelled to Leeds United's Elland Road to represent Torquay United Community Sports Trust at the Nationals after they won the initial regional tournament back in March.

The girls kicked off with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Boston United. In their second match, the girls battled out an entertaining 1-1 draw against Everton FC.

The Torquay girls were in a group with Boston United, Everton FC, Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

Mid-way through the morning, the girls were given a behind-the-scenes look at the changing rooms of Leeds United where they also got the chance to have their picture taken next to the Premier League Trophy.

After a short break, Premier League giants Manchester United were up next and despite losing the game 0-2, the girls worked very hard and demonstrated great teamwork.

In the final game, the girls got their first win against another Premier League opponent, Crystal Palace, winning the game 1-0. This meant the team finished second, only to Manchester United.

TUCST education manager Dominic Goodhew and Sherwell Valley assistant head teacher Matt Briant said: "The girls can be immensely proud of their performances against some of the country's top opposition. Reaching the Nationals gave our girls the chance to showcase the abundance of talent down in Torbay."
