Exeter Airport has seen a significant boost to its international standing, with its flagship connection to Amsterdam Schiphol reaching an average 80 per cent occupancy in its first year.
The route, launched by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in March 2025, has effectively bypassed the need for South West travellers to trek to London hubs, instead plugging the region directly into a network spanning from Peru to Hong Kong.
While the Netherlands remains the most popular destination for those using the service, the airline reported a surge in travellers heading to Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
The "hub" model at Amsterdam Schiphol has also simplified travel to the United States, providing a local alternative for South West residents who would otherwise face long journeys to London’s major airports.
Steve Wiltshire, Managing Director of Exeter Airport, said the route has been a "hugely positive addition" to the region.
"The route has provided vital access to KLM’s global network," he said. "It has made it easier for people and businesses in our region to connect with destinations around the world."
The impact of the route has been felt locally as well as abroad. According to KLM, the service has acted as a front door for international visitors to the South West, supporting the local tourism economy.
Inbound passengers have travelled to Exeter from a diverse range of countries, including:
Argentina
Canada
South Africa
Hong Kong
