Torbay Country Bowls Club
In the 1920’s Oldway Mansion ceased to be the private residence of the Singer family and in 1929 the Torbay County Club was formed.
In 1930, the decision was taken to establish the bowls section as a separate entity with the title Torbay Country Bowling Club (TCBC).
The Opening Ceremony at TCBC on May 3, 1930 was performed by Mrs Graham Singer, deputising for the club’s first President, Mr Paris Singer. Mrs Singer was presented with a ‘silver jack’ in appreciation of the establishment of a bowling centre in the beautiful Oldway grounds and gardens. She kindly returned the ‘silver jack’ to the club when Paris Singer died.
‘Casting the silver jack’ remains an Opening Day tradition at TCBC. This year, the club has proudly announced that Torbay MP Mr Steve Darling (aided by his dog Jennie) will bowl the silver jack on the Green at 1:30pm on Saturday, April 18.
TCBC welcome new members to come and try the game. The club has four Open Days this year and three ‘try before you buy’ evening sessions.
Open Days from 10am – 1pm: Saturday, April 25 Sunday, May 10 Saturday, May 23 Sunday, May 24
Try before you buy sessions 5.30pm – 7.30pm: Friday evenings on May 8, 15 and 22.
