Exeter City suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat to League One leaders Lincoln City at St James Park, but the Grecians showed resilience and spirit against a side currently setting the pace at the top of the table.

Lincoln began the contest brightly and applied early pressure, forcing Exeter onto the defensive in the opening stages. The visitors created several chances in the first quarter of the match, though their finishing let them down as Rob Street, Tom Bayliss, Tom Hamer and Ryan One all failed to hit the target.

Despite weathering the early storm, Exeter fell behind in the 32nd minute. Adam Reach delivered a well-placed free-kick into the area which found Hamer unmarked, and the defender headed beyond Joe Whitworth from around 10 yards to give the visitors the lead.

Whitworth ensured the deficit remained just one before the interval with a superb save to deny Jack Moylan after the Lincoln attacker was played through on goal by One.

The Grecians goalkeeper was called into action again after the break, producing another excellent stop to keep out One. Moylan pounced on the rebound but saw his follow-up effort bravely blocked by Charlie Cummins as Exeter defended determinedly to stay in the game.

City gradually grew into the contest and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Josh Magennis produced a crucial defensive header to clear a Moylan effort off the line before leading the charge at the other end.

Magennis later headed wide, while Exeter’s top scorer Jayden Wareham came closest to salvaging a point when he drilled narrowly wide late on.
