Pupils celebrate their new trim trail
Pupils at a primary school in Buckland Monachorum have been putting their “balance and bravery” to the test following the opening of a new outdoor adventure facility.
Children at St Andrew’s CofE Academy finally took to the playground this week to christen their new ‘trim trail.’
The project was made possible by a generous bequest from the late Dr Bernard Raeke, whose donation funded both the trail and significant improvements to the school’s Key Stage 1 outdoor area.
The opening had been delayed for several weeks due to a period of poor weather, but pupils were finally able to explore the equipment once the sun emerged.
Members of the school council were given the honor of being the "first ambassadors" to trial the course.
The new facilities allow children to climb, balance, and navigate their way through various obstacles.
Younger pupils are also benefiting from new balancing beams designed to help them build coordination and physical skills at an early age.
The school, which is part of the Learning Academy Partnership, says the facilities are designed to integrate with their wider PE curriculum.
This curriculum focuses on helping pupils develop movement confidence and understand the importance of leading healthy, active lives.
'A Positive Difference'
Debbie Nunn, Headteacher at St Andrew’s, expressed her gratitude for the donation that funded the project.
She noted that it has been wonderful to see the children challenging themselves and working together on the new equipment. Ms Nunn added that the school is incredibly grateful for Dr Bernard Raeke’s bequest, which she said has made a positive difference to the children’s learning and play.
The school also highlighted that the new area complements their existing Forest School sessions.
These sessions use hands-on experiences in the natural environment to help pupils build resilience and independence.
Tracey Cleverly, CEO of the Learning Academy Partnership, said that opportunities like this help children develop important social and emotional skills.
She added that it was fantastic to see St Andrew’s continuing to create engaging learning environments that support pupils’ wellbeing both inside and outside the classroom.
