Exeter residents are being urged to prepare for strong winds and heavy rain on Tuesday, 20 January, as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for the city.

Met Office authorities warn the conditions may cause disruption to travel, coastal areas, and local services throughout the day.

The Met Office expects south-easterly winds to strengthen Tuesday morning, particularly over and to the northwest of high ground, with gusts of 45-50 mph.

Inland, gusts of 45-55 mph are likely, and the most exposed hills and coasts could see gusts reaching 60-65 mph.

A band of heavy rain is forecast to move east across the region during the day, easing once it passes.

“Strong winds may cause some disruption, especially to travel,” the Met Office notes.

Residents can expect delays to road, rail, air, and ferry transport, with some bus and train services taking longer than usual.

High-sided vehicles may experience difficulty on exposed routes and bridges, and some short-term loss of power or other services is possible.

Coastal routes, sea fronts, and communities may be affected by spray and large waves.

Those travelling are urged to check road conditions, bus and train timetables, and amend plans if necessary.

People should prepare for potential power cuts by gathering essentials such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

Those near the coast are reminded to be vigilant around cliffs and large waves, keep dogs on leads, and call 999 to reach the Coastguard in emergencies.

Residents are also advised to monitor forecasts closely, as weather warnings can change quickly.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area,” the guidance adds.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen said: “A spell of strong winds and heavy rain is expected to affect southwest England, including Exeter. Inland wind gusts could reach 45-55 mph, and possibly 60-65 mph over the most exposed hills and coasts. Heavy rain will accompany these winds, which could bring disruption to vulnerable areas.”

Deputy Chief Forecaster Dan Holley added that given recent rain and thawing snow, localised flooding is possible in some areas, and large waves may create additional hazards along the coast.

Residents are encouraged to plan their day around the warning and to take all reasonable steps to stay safe while conditions persist.
