Icy conditions set to continue in Exeter as Arctic air grips Devon

Icy conditions are expected to continue across Exeter as cold Arctic air remains over the UK, bringing well below average temperatures, widespread frost and an increased risk of hazardous surfaces.

The Met Office says the bitterly cold weather is set to persist through the weekend and into next week, with daytime temperatures in Exeter and across Devon forecast to remain in the low to mid-single figures.

Overnight temperatures are expected to dip well below freezing at times, increasing the likelihood of ice forming on roads and pavements.

Residents in Exeter have already reported slippery conditions, particularly during early morning and evening hours.

While significant snowfall is not currently forecast for the city itself, the Met Office has warned of an increasing risk of snow showers over higher ground, including Dartmoor, which could have knock-on effects for travel into and out of the city.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are in place across parts of southern England, including Devon, highlighting the risk of icy surfaces and potential travel disruption.

The Met Office has also issued amber warnings for snow in parts of northern Britain, underlining the severity of the wider cold spell affecting the country.

Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said the cold weather could last “well into next week”, with wintry hazards continuing and further weather warnings possible. He urged people to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and plan ahead.

Health officials have also issued warnings about the impact of the cold.

The UK Health Security Agency has placed England under an amber cold health alert until 6 January, advising people to check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbours, particularly older residents and those with existing health conditions.

The Met Office is encouraging people in Exeter to take extra care when travelling, allow more time for journeys and be aware of the risk of slips and falls.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions before setting off, especially during early mornings when ice is most likely to form.
