Celebrations for Ilmari Niskanen. Pic from PPAUK
Exeter City have hauled themselves out of the League One relegation zone with a tremendous 3-0 victory over Barnsley at St James Park
The Grecians badly needed a change in fortune after a run of decent performances not being matched by results, but they had to survive an early siege from the Tykes, who created numerous chances in a dominant opening.
Gradually, City found their rhythm and began to frustrate Barnsley with controlled spells of possession. The reward arrived four minutes before half-time, when Ethan Brierley floated a perfect cross for Ilmari Niskanen to crash home the opener with a powerful volley.
Exeter had a major spring in their step after the restart and deservedly doubled the lead on the hour, Jayden Wareham applying a simple tap-in after Jack Fitzwater’s initial header had been saved.
Barnsley’s race was run 17 minutes from time, Niskanen scampering down the left to deliver a lovely assist for Reece Cole to convert. A great day for City, who can now look forward to a tough Boxing Day trip to high-flying Cardiff.
