Christmas events planned for Newton Abbot this evening (Wednesday 17 December) have been forced to be cancelled because of the poor weather forecast.
The decision follows a Met Office yellow weather warning for heavy rain covering Devon this evening, with forecasters warning of possible travel disruption and localised flooding, particularly over higher ground such as Dartmoor.

Organisers confirmed that the Mayor’s Carol Service, Santa visit and late-night shopping event will no longer go ahead due to concerns about conditions later today.
The cancellation was announced by Nigel Canham, who said the decision had been taken reluctantly but was unavoidable.
“Very sad to say that tonight’s Mayor’s carol service, Santa visit and late night shopping in Newton Abbot has been cancelled owing to the weather forecast,” he said.
“It goes without saying that the team is gutted and hates to disappoint everyone but there really is no choice.”

The event had been due to take place in the town centre and included festive activities for families, alongside extended opening hours for local shops.
Residents are being asked to help spread the word about the cancellation to avoid people travelling into the town unnecessarily.
Nigel Canham thanked local media and supporters for their coverage and backing over the past year, and said planning for future events was already underway.
“Planning for 2026 is already under way so watch this space for more great news from Newton Abbot in the coming year,” he added.
No alternative date has been announced for the cancelled event.
