North Devon’s rugged coastline has long been a magnet for surfers, from seasoned professionals chasing winter swells to families seeking gentle summer rollers.

With its newly designated World Surfing Reserve status, the region’s reputation has never been stronger. Here are seven standout surf destinations that continue to draw wave-seekers year-round.

  1. Croyde Bay – The Crown Jewel

Often hailed as one of the best beach breaks in the UK, Croyde is a fast, hollow and powerful wave that rewards experienced surfers. Its low-tide barrels can be world-class on the right swell, though strong rips mean beginners are better off watching from the sand or heading to neighbouring beaches.

  1. Saunton Sands – The Longboarders’ Paradise

Just around the headland from Croyde, Saunton offers three miles of mellow, peeling surf ideal for longboarders and improvers. Its gentle walls provide long, graceful rides, and the expansive beach ensures plenty of space, even on busy summer days.

  1. Woolacombe – Consistent and Crowd-Friendly

Woolacombe’s long stretch of golden sand hosts multiple peaks, making it a reliable option for surfers of all abilities. With both punchy sections and softer reforming waves, it’s a favourite for surf schools as well as intermediates looking to progress.

  1. Putsborough – Shelter From the Storm

Tucked behind Baggy Point, Putsborough often benefits from added protection when strong winds batter other beaches. Clean, lined-up waves are common here on blustery days, providing a welcome sanctuary for surfers escaping messy conditions elsewhere.

  1. Lynmouth – A Point Break With Attitude

For advanced surfers, Lynmouth offers one of Britain’s rare point breaks. On a big swell and easterly wind, it transforms into a long, powerful right-hander that draws surfers from across the country. The rocky take-off zone and strong currents, however, demand respect.

  1. Westward Ho! – Versatile and Welcoming

With its huge beach, reliable surf and relaxed atmosphere, Westward Ho! is a magnet for families and learners. The waves here vary from playful summer rollers to powerful winter peaks, making it a year-round destination for surfers of all skill levels.

  1. Combesgate – A Hidden Gem Near Mortehoe

Just north of Woolacombe, this tucked-away beach offers quality surf at mid-to-low tide and attracts fewer crowds than its busier neighbour. Though smaller and rockier, it can deliver clean, fun waves and a more peaceful session when the main beaches are heaving.
