Residents in Plymouth and across Dartmoor are being advised to prepare for heavy rain and possible disruption as two yellow weather warnings have been issued for the region.

The Met Office has placed warnings for Saturday 29 November and again on Monday 1 December, with no alerts in place for Sunday.

Saturday warning: Heavy rain and travel delays expected

The first warning runs from 06:00 to 23:59 on Saturday, with forecasters warning that heavy rain may lead to difficult travel conditions.

The Met Office says spray and flooding on roads are likely, meaning journey times could be longer than usual.

Bus and train services may also be affected, with a chance of cancellations where flooding occurs.

There is also a small chance some homes and businesses could experience flooding, and a slight risk that isolated communities might become cut off by rising water.

Power cuts are considered unlikely but possible.

Rain is expected to develop across southwest England on Friday night and move northeast throughout Saturday.

Widespread totals of 20-30 mm are possible, with as much as 50 mm in some areas and up to 60-80 mm over higher ground.

Monday warning: Dartmoor could see up to 80 mm of rain

A second yellow warning is in force for Monday, from 00:00 to 15:00, covering Plymouth, Dartmoor and wider Devon.

A band of heavy rain is set to move in from the southwest on Sunday night, becoming widespread on Monday morning before clearing later in the day.

Rainfall will vary, but totals of 20-30 mm are expected across the region.

On Dartmoor, accumulations may reach 60-80 mm, with other upland areas such as Exmoor and Dorset potentially seeing 40-50 mm.

Strong southwesterly winds near the English Channel coast may make conditions more challenging.

Advice for residents

The Met Office recommends checking whether properties are at risk of flooding and preparing a basic flood plan if necessary.

Motorists are urged to review travel routes and public transport timetables in case of delays.

Residents are also advised to prepare for potential power cuts by gathering torches, batteries and phone chargers, and to stay updated as weather warnings may change at short notice.

The warnings carry a very low likelihood but medium impact risk level.
