The South Molton Training Band has enjoyed an exceptional year, capped by winning a major regional competition.
The band’s dedicated musical director Gil Taylor entered them in the South West Brass Bands Association 77th Annual Contest thinking it would be a good experience for the trainees, but they exceeded all expectations by taking first in their section.
Gil said: “When their entry was sent in, I thought it would be a good experience for them to enter. For them to come away having won is a great achievement.”
The band performed a short programme of music at the contest, held at Torquay Riviera Centre and the adjudicator praised their performance as a well-played and entertaining programme.
Now the band is inviting new members to join its friendly and fast-growing ensemble, which is made up of musicians of all ages and abilities.

The band rehearses every Monday in the Bandroom in the churchyard at St Mary Magdalene Church in South Molton from 6 to 7pm. New members can expect a warm welcome, supportive tuition and all they need to get started, including the loan of an instrument.
No previous experience is needed, new starters do not even need to be able to play or read music - everything will be taught, step-by-step, helping newcomers quickly become part of the band.

Emily Abbott, whose children are in the band, said: “Gil and Dawn have given their time freely to give my children the gift of learning music.
“They have also given them values of commitment, perseverance, respect and belonging. The band is a great place for children (and adults) to learn.”
Band member Franklin, aged 12, added: “Gil is really fun and a really good teacher.”
Anyone who would like to find out more about joining the band can get in touch by emailing bandsecretary@southmoltontownband.co.uk or anyone is welcome to drop in at the Bandroom by the church between 6 and 7pm on Mondays.
