Autumn success on charter boats

Angling in South Devon

The charter boats have managed a few trips recently, with the odd window in the weather allowing them to get out.
Torquay’s silver Halo skippered by Matt Forester has fished the wrecks finding Pollack and Bass for his anglers and on a recent Tuna trip where the fish are measured to give an estimated weight one of his anglers known only as Dave caught the fish of a lifetime with an estimated weight of 530lbs.
The season is drawing to a close but Matt has a few dates left in early December if fancy battling one of these giants of the sea. Brixham’s Spot on Charters fished the wrecks where skipper Ross Parham found Cod, Pollack, Coalfish, Bass, Red Gurnard and even Squid for his anglers.
On the shore reports are that the whiting are now here in numbers although nothing big has been recorded yet, with the weight going up to 1lb 4oz.
Flounders are showing in the rivers and estuaries with the best that I have heard of so far this winter weighing 2lbs 2oz. Dan Patrick has been finding a few at one of his favourite marks.
Mackerel are still showing on occasions on the South Hams Beaches as well as a few Rays. Aaron Colhoun targeted the Rays without success but his efforts were rewarded with his first ever Spurdog weighing around the 5lb mark.
It is still a little early for this species so the signs are good for more and larger fish as the winter progresses. Wayne Hand continues to fish Chesil beach and is finding the odd Cod amongst the usual species.
Two more Flounder competition dates have been announced, firstly the ever popular RNLI open on the Teign which this year will be on Sunday 10yh December. Sign on is from 7am at the lifeboat station with the weigh in there after the match. Entry is £8 with an optional pool of £2. Prizes are as ever wonderful turkey hampers.
The other match is the Mike Johnson three rivers competition fishing the Exe. Teign and Kinsbridge estuary from midnight through to the weigh in at the waterside InW at 5.30pm on the 30th December. Entry is £10 with cash and tackle prizes. For more information call Mike on 07703382284.
Two rounds of the NAFA winter sweepstake rover have been fished at Bradley Pond. Gary Webber took top honours in the first with a bag weight of 12lbs 13oz with second going to Mike Hadley with 8lbs 13oz and third to Duncan Arnold with 8lbs 13oz.
The prize for the biggest Perch went to Mike Mudge with a fish of 1lb1oz. The second match was won by Lee Dance with a weight of 14lbs 4oz, Phil woodhouse took second with 7lbs 14oz and Duncan Arnold with 7lbs 12oz, Duncan also had the biggest Perch of 14oz.
Don’t forget our fish of the Month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Pictures and catch details can be emailed to me at johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
