Babet changes the angling week

Latest angling news

Storm Babet upset a few anglers plans this week but when the seas started to settle a few anglers hit the beaches and found plenty of bait being washed up, which meant feeding fish.
Scott Harris fished a local beach and found plenty of feeding Bass, catching them up to 5lbs. Other anglers headed further East to the steep shingle beaches and found the Cod once again eager to feed.
Before the storms, Sole had been a target fish and seem to have been plentiful on both the South coast and also in the Bristol Channel. Several Exmouth SAC members have weighed in these fish with Andy Browning weighing in a good fish. Newton Abbot’s Tristan Rowe found one of 1lb 12oz, Saleem Ali also found them feeding. Ragworm are the bait to use superb fish and Preston bait and tackle usually have a good supply of hand dug Ragworm at the weekends.
Elsewhere around the coast, James Trevett of Honiton SAC spent a frustrating few hours with a loaf of bread trying to get Thick lipped Mullet feeding before eventually fooling a decent fish to take his hook bait. Bream can still be caught at Chesil Beach as Wayne Hand found on a recent session.
Junior angler Cruz Arnold fished a daylight session with his dad Stephen and, much to his delight, caught his first ever Cod. Dan Hale fished one of our estuaries on a night session, armed with lugworm for bait and landed a couple of nice Flounders amongst the plentiful small Bass.
Brixham SAC’s Adrian Houghton decided to try something different and fished a local rock mark, where he caught a new personal best and club specimen Ballan Wrasse of 4lbs 10oz. Archie Sweetland deserves another mention, as he has fished both North and South Coasts recently, landing Both Small Eye and Blonde Rays, as well as fishing a competition and coming third in his zone.
The National Flounder championships will soon be upon us, with the dates being November 11 and 12. The top prize in this event is a fantastic £1,250 with the pool also available. Sign on will be at the Teignmouth SAC hut on the back beach at Teignmouth on Thursday and Friday evening, as well as on Saturday morning. Full details can be found on their Facebook page.
Newton Abbot Fishing Association have had a couple of matches recently. Firstly, their Wednesday rover on Bradley Pond was won by Duncan Arnold with 19lbs 9oz, with second going to Mike Hadley with 14lbs 9oz and third to Gary Webber with 14lbs 2oz. The latest round of their silver fish league was won by Dean Bradford with 16lbs 2oz with Gary Webber and Jamie Pearce taking the next two place with 15lbs and 13lbs respectively.
Plenty of fish have been caught this month but there is still time to get your catch entered in our Fish of the Month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Please email pictures and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
