Dad and daughter are winning recipe

South West Chef of the Year

Budding chef Jessica Klapsia has been recognised in one of the UK’s most prestigious chef competitions - and dad Zibi didn't do bad either.
Jessica, 14, a student at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School, won Devon Junior Chef of the Year in June, qualifying for the South West final earlier this month. And although she did not win the title, it was a proud moment for her – and for dad Zibi, who also reached the semi finals of the competition in the Professional Chef category.
The South West Chef of the Year competition is the only culinary competition in the UK that recognises professional chefs, student chefs, junior cooks and home cooks. It is widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading culinary contests.
The competition partners junior cooks (aged under16) with accomplished chefs to support their development. Jessica was mentored by Mark Dodson of The Masons Arms at Knowstone. Her dish comprised of pan fried sea bream, curry, cauliflower and capers.
Dad Zibi, executive chef at the Imperial Hotel in Torquay, entered the Professional Chef category of the competition and reached the semi finals.
He said: “I'm very proud to have taken part in this competition, and I think anyone who loves cooking should, as it gives you more confidence and belief in yourself. I'm super proud of Jessica."
The winners of the remaining categories in the South West Chef of the Year will be announced at a celebration dinner at Exeter Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 24.
Organisers said the competition provides a platform for the region’s young chefs to build their profiles and a much-needed opportunity for the industry to promote the high standards of hospitality in the region.
Celeb Michael Caines, joint founder and head judge of the competition, said: “Well done to both Jessica and Zibi, it is an incredible achievement to reach the semi finals and finals of this competition. Both of their dishes were excellent, and we love that it’s a real family affair for them!”
Two other South Devon chefs are also competing for glory. They are Ben Greenhalf from Exeter College and Gather, Totnes, who is a finalist in the student/apprentice chef category; and Lucinda Ellicott from Paignton, who is a finalist in the home cook category.
