Angling round-up from South Devon
Brilliant sunshine and virtually no wind saw 69 anglers spread out along Brixham Breakwater for the Brixham SAC RNLI open fishing competition, including 22 juniors.
Just 27 anglers brought fish to the weigh in, where the honours went to Chris Scales with a Scad of 69.5%, Simon Fox and Jack Hawketts took the next two places with a Bass and a Scad respectively. I fished with my Granddaughter Brooke Reynolds who caught one of the few Garfish caught on the night and beat me by one place.
The overall winners on the night were the RNLI who benefitted by the sum of £164. A big thank you goes to Brixham Bait and Tackle who once again sponsored the competition and provided as large table of prizes.
Daniel Patrick has been to one of our estuaries chasing Gilthead Bream and had a good session landing six fish up to 4lbs 1oz. Teignmouth SAC have been busy of late with plenty of good fish being landed including a shore caught conger eel of 19lbs 12oz for Andrew Collett with Kevin Hill landing a Smoothhound of 15lbs 6oz.
A busy week at Newbarn Angling Centre has seen Willow Pond closed for work with tree clearing and bank reconstruction taking place whilst all other ponds are now accessible, albeit with more work to do. There will be a netting of Willow Pond shortly to remove many of the Silver fish and some of the smaller Carp with a feeding programme taking place to bring the weight of the fish up with some hopefully going over the magical 30lbs New Owners Alex and Samantha Bickham are really trying to get the fishery looking good and fishing well again.
Newton Abbot FA held the first round of the Silver fish league with first place going to Darrell Pattie with a bag of 16lbs 12oz closely followed by Ethan Gilpin and Mike Hadley. Spring Pond’s latest match saw Steve Barrell win with a phenomenal weight of 118lbs 14oz, his closest rival was Chris Packer with 44lbs 14oz and Jason Fay took third, not far behind with 44lbs 4oz.
There is still time to get your pictures and catch reports in for the August Fish of the Month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Please email johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
