Tributes have flowed for a man who spent his life making sure thousands of people were safe enjoying theirs in Torquay
Well-known, much-loved and well respected Torbay Street pastor Trevor Staveley has died aged 73.
His weekends would entail leading and joining the Pastors team through to the early hours on Torquay harbourside with safety advice and their bus offering a safe haven to night-goers who were in danger of injury or even sexual attacks after a night out.
Trevor was described as a 'dear husband, a loving father, a wonderful friend and a brilliant colleague'.
His family said: "He was an amazing mentor, coach and role model. His wife, Sue (they were married for 17 years), thought the world of him, as did his children; Martin, Mark, Marco and Antonia. He was also a great brother and very loved and is definitely missed."
Trevor started Street Pastoring in 2008 where he put his faith into action and later became co-ordinator of Torbay Street Pastors.
His family said: "There was something different about him and everyone noticed it. People came to Christ through Trevor, they saw the light in him.
"He always went the extra mile, for everybody. Trevor gave his time for free, to anyone who needed it. No one was less worthy in his eyes. He had a good relationship with the homeless who really appreciated his help. He attended to those who were intoxicated and injured, as well as talking many out of suicide.
"Trevor was the type of man who would stay beyond his 4am shift to ensure not one vulnerable person was left behind. Trevor never expected anything in return, but was often approached by grateful parents who wanted to thank him for getting their children home safely. Trevor won many awards for his work, one being the British Empire medal. He not only gave countless hours of his free time as a street pastor, but was also the police chaplain for Torbay and volunteered at the Torbay Winter Night Shelter. No one will be able to replace someone with a heart like Trevor and as a community."
Among those paying tributes was Grace Cooper who looked on Trevor as a father figure. She described him as the 'most kind, caring and generous man I have ever met' and said he was the man who worked day and night to ensure the vulnerable were safe, was ready to help at any moment, was well known in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham for getting intoxicated people home safely, who prevented countless sexual assaults, calmed hundreds of fights, talked many out of suicide and who gave his time for free, to anyone who needed it.
"No one will be able to replace someone with a heart like Trevor," said Grace.
Best Bar One which represents the night-time economy in the Bay also paid tribute.
Co-chairs Tracey Pounds and Rob Elford said: "Trevor was a founding member of the Best Bar None scheme here in Torbay. His energy, enthusiasm and support over the years will never be forgotten. A familiar face on the harbour volunteering his time alongside all the other Torbay Street Pastors over the years earned him huge respect and endless awards. We shall continue with our T.R.E.V.O.R. award in his memory at our annual awards ceremony. Thank you, Trevor. Our thoughts go to Sue and all his family."
A website funding page has been set up in memory of Trevor to raise £5,000 to give him the 'memorial he deserves.' Details are here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ggbyyq-trevors-funeral
His son Marco says: "We want to give Trevor the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes. Trevor did so much for the Torbay community in his time with Street Pastors and Best Bar None and local police. Please help us to send Trevor off in the best way possible and do a little something that he loved to do and help the community."
