Angling: Impressive and bountiful catches as summer continues

Angling around our coast has been fantastic this summer and seems to be getting better

I've had so many pictures sent this week that it's difficult to know where to start.
Boat anglers fishing the wrecks aboard Torquay charter boat silver Halo continue to find plenty of medium-sized pollack as well as bass and the odd cod.
Brixham SAC members fished aboard Dartmouth charter boat The African Queen and enjoyed a day of mixed fishing with plaice, small-eyed rays, smoothhounds and bull huss up to 9lbs being landed.
Freddie Hoare fished aboard a private boat out of Salcombe and among his catch was a nice cod.
On the shore, rays and smoothhounds continue to be the target for most anglers with Saleem Ali and Christopher Axon heading east for a night session on the rays - Christopher’s small-eyed weighed 9lbs 6oz while Saleem had one of 10lbs 1oz.
Saleem also fished a day session where he landed a lovely black bream of 1lb 8oz.
The best smoothhound of the week fell to the rod of Chris Pepper, who landed a fine fish of 13lbs 9oz on light gear. While junior Ethan Hammond was fishing with his father Matt and landed a new Brixham SAC junior record.
One of our estuaries has produced a big gilthead bream of 8lbs 6oz for Steve King. Another estuary angler is Phil Mingo, who loves catching mullet and he has landed a new club record and personal best thin-lipped mullet with a fine fish of 3lbs 12oz.
Upham Farm continues to produce some nice carp to the rods of regular Simon White whose best this week tipped the scales at 28lbs.
The Tackle Trader evening rover league continues with Ethan Gilpin taking the honours this week with a bag of 61lbs 2oz with Sam Powell and Mike Smith taking the next two places with 44lbs 10oz and 38lbs 2oz respectively.
Spring Ponds held a three-hour evening match and top weight was Chris Packer with 40lbs 8oz fishing a pellet waggler on the far bank and finishing with the pole and pellets in the margins. Second was Jason Fay with 38lbs 10oz and third Alan Crouch with 21lbs.
Once again I have had a difficult time in deciding who to award the Fish of the Month prize, kindly sponsored by Side winder Lures and Carp a Diem baits. The prize pack this month goes to Torquay’s Dean Corbett with his turbot of 23lbs. Please continue to email pictures and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com for the July competition.
