Torbay Triathlon Club flying into the winter season

Torbay Triathlon Club members were back in action over the weekend, competing across Devon, West Yorkshire and the South West, with impressive performances, personal bests, podium finishes and even a European qualification place to celebrate.

From road running and duathlon to cyclo-cross and cani-cross, club members once again demonstrated their versatility and determination across a variety of challenging events.

Three Torbay Triathlon Club members made the journey to North Devon to compete in the popular Bideford 10K, brilliantly organised by Bideford Amateur Athletic Club (AAC).

With almost 800 runners taking part, the event is a great example of the value of local running clubs, whose dedication and organisation make races like this so enjoyable and successful.

Starting and finishing close to the Bideford AAC clubhouse, the course takes runners along a mixture of relatively flat roads and the scenic Tarka Trail. Featuring three gentle inclines, a tunnel and spectacular views across the Taw and Torridge estuary, the route offers an excellent opportunity for runners looking to achieve a personal best. With just 55 metres of total elevation gain, it is a firm favourite with competitors.

Conditions were ideal, with cool, still weather providing the perfect racing environment.

First home for the club was SM Jason Hurford, who produced an excellent performance in his return from injury, finishing in 17th place in an impressive 58 minutes 51 seconds.

He was followed by SM Jay Porter, who continued his excellent form by recording a new personal best of 1 hour 5 minutes 2 seconds, finishing 62nd.

Completing the club's trio in style was SM Lewis Cholerton, who rounded off his season with another personal best, comfortably breaking the 80-minute barrier in 1 hour 9 minutes 45 seconds to finish 126th.

All three can be delighted with their performances in a field of 774 finishers.

Meanwhile, further north in Leeds, West Yorkshire, SM Ben Flower was enjoying another successful outing at The Pig 10K.

The race follows the banks of the River Aire and the Trans Pennine Trail, starting and finishing at the Piglove By The River craft beer garden, within Citu's Climate Innovation District.

Adding a little extra incentive for competitors, all finishers traditionally receive a complimentary craft beer from Piglove Brewing Co.

Ben continued his excellent run of form, producing an outstanding performance to finish second overall in an impressive 40 minutes 9 seconds, in a field of almost 50 runners.

There was further success for Ben Flower, who was also back in action at the Devon Duathlon, held at the superb Roadford Lake venue.

The event featured European Championship qualifying races over sprint and standard distances.

Roadford Lake provides an excellent setting for duathlon racing. The course begins with two laps of a traffic-free 5K circuit, predominantly on gravel, before competitors head out onto a 46K bike course using quiet, rolling country roads. The cycling route is particularly highly regarded and regularly used for the National Masters Road Race Championships. Athletes then return to complete a final lap of the 5K running circuit.

Ben tackled the standard-distance event, recording the following impressive splits:

  • First 10K run: 46 minutes 6 seconds
  • 46K bike: 1 hour 28 minutes 41 seconds
  • Final 5K run: 23 minutes 2 seconds

His combined time of 2 hours 39 minutes 2 seconds secured an excellent 21st place out of 104 competitors.

Even more importantly, Ben's performance earned him a coveted European Championship qualification place, providing another fantastic achievement for the club.

Cyclo-cross continues to grow in popularity, attracting competitors of all ages and abilities. The fast-paced discipline combines speed, endurance and technical skill on short off-road circuits, typically featuring grass, mud and challenging obstacles.

Round five of this year's South West Cyclo-cross series took place at Newnham Park, Plymouth, where competitors faced muddy and testing conditions.

Two Torbay Triathlon Club members made the short journey to take on the challenging course.

First home was V50 Jo Atkins, who produced a strong ride to finish in 48 minutes 32 seconds, taking second place in the V50 category.

He was followed by SL Caitlin Moss, who showed real determination to complete the race despite feeling under the weather, crossing the line in 50 minutes 56 seconds.

Both riders deserve credit for tackling such a demanding course in difficult conditions.

The club's canine-running team were also back in action as the new cani-cross season got underway.

SM Matt Giles, accompanied by his canine partner Neville, and MV50 Steve Hill, running with Murphy, headed up the A30 to compete in the Sportiva Devon Trail Race 10K Cani-cross event.

The challenging 10K route featured plenty of variety, including undulating hard-packed trails, tarmac sections, grassy fields and some particularly slippery muddy stretches underfoot.

Matt and Neville produced a fantastic performance, finishing second overall in 42 minutes 1 second. Having led much of the race, they were unfortunately unable to hold on to the lead during the final 500 metres but still secured an excellent podium finish.

For Steve and Murphy, it was their competitive debut as a partnership, and they made a very promising start, finishing in 57 minutes 4 seconds and taking first place in their age group.

It was a superb opening outing for both partnerships, with plenty of promise for the season ahead.

From personal bests on the roads of North Devon to European qualification at Roadford Lake, podium finishes in Plymouth and Leeds, and success on the trails with four-legged teammates, it was another action-packed weekend for Torbay Triathlon Club.

The variety of events and the determination shown by members across all disciplines highlight the strength and enthusiasm within the club.

Congratulations to everyone who competed and represented Torbay Triathlon Club so well!
