Torbay team triumphant in the UK Tuna tournament

A huge congratulations to private Torquay boat Sylvia K and her skipper Dom, with their crew of David Mordecai and Andy Bolt with friends from Portugal Paulo Andrade and Joao Asevedo, who travelled to Falmouth for the UK bluefin Tuna Championships and came back with the winners Trophy.

Although plenty of Tuna had been seen, the fishing was hard and they were the only boat to land four Tuna on Saturday, beating both local boats and commercial charter boats.

Honiton SAC members have been busy of late with an all-night rover match fishing anywhere between Portland and Lyme Regis. Ten plus species were caught with the best fish a Scad of nearly 14oz (92.5%) caught by Ken Sparks. Colin Berry was top rod with 492% with Ben Male in second and Nick Fox third.

The annual Seaton Carnival competition found the top three places taken by Honiton SAC members, who found fishing a bit tricky with the coloured water. However, fish were landed and the results were decided by the aggregate of the two best specimens. Nick Fox came out on top this time with 146%, his fish being a Mullet and a Mackerel. Phil Abbot took second spot with Barry Hawkins in Third.

Honiton SAC have a thriving junior section with plenty of seniors willing to help the youngsters learn and become great anglers.

Some are putting the seniors to shame with the quantity of fish caught. Two who deserve a mention are Jack Squance ang Goerge Penniston-Bird, Jack found some nice Bream feeding and George has found Mackerel, Scad and Wrasse recently.

Another competition worthy of a mention was the Angling Trust Wyvern Division Junior Competition fished on West Bay’s East Pier sponsored by the Local Tackle shop. West Bay cleaned up on this one with the winner being Ben Cracknell, second and third were Theo John and Sam Carter.

Elsewhere, Jud Lascelles took a quick trip to a local East Devon Beach and landed a Bass of around 5lbs and Sonny and Dave Butterworth have been searching for a 5lbs plus Wrasse with Dave coming out on top at present with a 4lb 9oz fish, Sonny is not far behind with his weighing 4lbs 2oz. On the boats, John Bovey of Dawlish has been fishing some distant wrecks and finding plenty of good sized Black Bream.

The September Fish of the Month Competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre is up and running, so please email your pictures and catch reports to [email protected]
