Reports from a packed weekend in the South Devon League

There was no trick or treat for Chudleigh Athletic, who were the latest side to lose to Lakeside Athletic. The league leaders extended their 100% start to the season with a 6-2 win at Kate Brook, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier Division to 10 points, having played seven games.

Paignton Saints had to share the points in a 1-1 draw at Kingsteignton Athletic, who have now drawn five of their seven games so far. Mark Voisey was on target for the Rams.

Elburton Villa were the big movers in the division. They recorded an impressive 5-1 victory over neighbours Plymouth True Blues at Millbay Park, moving into fifth place and within two points of second.

Ilsington Villa remain well placed in third and, with two games in hand, could put pressure on the leaders in the coming months. A 4-2 win against Newton Abbot 66, who have endured an indifferent start to the season, was secured thanks to a hat-trick from Daniel Langford and a goal from Thomas Johns.

Totnes and Dartington remain winless, and this week's 8-2 defeat at the hands of Newton Abbot Spurs 2nds sees them still rooted to the bottom. The victors, meanwhile, move into fourth place.

Division One

Division One seems to have become a five-horse race in the early stages, and Paignton Villa surrendered top spot after losing 2-0 to Watcombe Wanderers. Goals from Sean Finch and Sam Pyne secured the points for Watcombe and cemented their place in the top five.

Bovey Tracey are the new leaders on goal difference, thanks to their 6-0 demolition of Buckfastleigh Rangers at the Duckspond. Goals from Lewis Perrin, Ben Moyle, Sam Stowell and Billy Robins were enough to beat the Greens, who ended the game with 10 players on the pitch.

Brixham Town had to call on several players from their second team to step up and play for the firsts due to a lack of availability, and what a result they produced! A 3-3 draw against an unbeaten Buckland Athletic 2nds side was no mean feat for the Fishermen, who added another valuable point to their tally.

Division Two

Division Two currently has three runaway leaders, although they have played more games than most of their rivals.

Newton Abbot Spurs 3rds lead the way, and this week's 7-1 win at East Allington United keeps them four points clear of Galmpton and Kingskerswell. Frank Orynik, Nick Garrett, Dylan Price and Martin McHugh were all on target for Spurs.

Galmpton had a free Saturday, but Kingskerswell won 6-2 at Paignton Villa 2nds to remain in third place and maintain their 100% record. Oscar Mills, Stephen Rohan, Stan Goulding, Liam Jones and Thomas Dare all scored for Kerswell, who also ended the game with 10 players.

Ivybridge Town 2nds and Tavistock fought out an entertaining 4-4 draw, with the treat of the afternoon being a hat-trick from Charly Jones of Ivybridge Town.

Ashburton picked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over local rivals Liverton United, leapfrogging three teams into eighth place.

Division Three

Newton Abbot 66 extended their lead at the top to six points following a tough afternoon against the 10 men of Newton Rovers at Bakers Park. The Sixes eventually ran out 2-1 winners, with goals from Cody Monk and Russ Ellis.

Kingsteignton Athletic 2nds moved into third place with a thumping 7-0 win at Stoke Gabriel TP. Nathen De-Ath scored a hat-trick, with Ashton Hogarth striking twice. Cameron Smith and Spencer Taylor completed the scoring.

Chudleigh Athletic 2nds are one of four teams level on nine points, and their 5-3 win at Liverton United 2nds keeps the Clarets well placed for another promotion challenge. Jack Salmons was another hat-trick hero on the day, while Hayden Cox and Tyler French also found the target in an entertaining game.

Ipplepen Athletic 2nds got back to winning ways with a 3-2 victory against Buckfastleigh Rangers. The win sees the Pens move up to fifth place, joining the group of teams on nine points.

Division Four

Lakeside Athletic 2nds moved into joint-top spot in Division Four, having played one more game than Signal Box, who were on cup duty.

A 7-1 win over a good Buckland Athletic 3rds side was an excellent return for the Plymouth outfit. Another hat-trick hero was Ben Rawlings, with super-sub Cameron Nolan adding two more and Daniel Down and Dewi Paris contributing one apiece.

Waldon Athletic belied their league position by holding unbeaten Barton Athletic to a 4-4 draw in the Torquay derby. Fred Ellicot was Waldon's hat-trick man, with Joshua Gregory also finding the back of the net.

Windmill got a much-needed win under their belts to move into mid-table and within just six points of the top, thanks to a 3-0 victory over Paignton Villa 3rds.

Division Five

Tamerton Foliot remain the team to beat, and their six-point lead at the top confirms that they are clearly punching below their weight.

This week they enjoyed a 6-1 home win against Broadhempston United, with a hat-trick from Isaac Phillips and further goals from Kyle Bowman, Luke Hetherington and Fabien Johnson-Ewers.

Tavistock 3rds remain in second place, thanks to a 5-4 win against Paignton Saints 3rds. Mathew Davidson, David Harwood, Ryan Small and George White made sure of the points for the Lambs.

Newton Albion are enjoying a decent run at the moment and moved into third place following a 2-1 victory over rivals WBB. Cameron Davis scored both goals for Albion, leaving them just two points off second place.

The draw specialists in the division were able to go the extra mile this week as Waldon Athletic 2nds secured their second win of the season by beating Kingsbridge/Kellaton United 3-1.

Marley Isaac scored in the first minute, while Charlie Charlesworth and Hayden McCarthy left it late to claim all three points and move the Clarets into fifth place.

Herald Cup Round-Up

There were a couple of Herald Cup ties played on Saturday.

The first was a delayed first-round fixture in which Bere Alston United 2nds (Division Four) knocked out their Division Three neighbours Horrabridge Rangers by three goals to nil, setting up a second-round tie against Tamerton Foliot next weekend.

East Allington United (Premier Division) were given a Halloween fright by Signal Box (Division Four), who took them all the way to a penalty shoot-out. The Pirates eventually won 7-6 on penalties after the game had finished 2-2.

This is the second penalty shoot-out East Allington have had to endure in this season's Herald Cup, so you know what they say about lucky omens! Could their name already be on the cup?

Games to Catch – Saturday, 7 November

Fixtures correct at the time of writing.

All eyes will be on the second round of the Herald Cup, sponsored by Torbay Clearance Services, with 12 great games to choose from.

There are a number of ties giving lower-league clubs the opportunity to pit their wits against higher-ranked opponents and potentially cause a cup shock.

In no particular order, Galmpton United (Division Three) take on Premier Division side and last season's losing semi-finalists, Ilsington Villa.

At Coach Road, last season's losing finalists, Premier Division Paignton Saints, certainly won't have a comfortable afternoon against high-flying Kingskerswell (Division Three).

Premier Division Newton Abbot 66 will need to be on their toes if they are to progress at the expense of Division Four side Barton Athletic.

Kingsteignton Athletic (Premier Division) are also sure to receive a warm welcome at Long Lane, where they face Newton Albion (Division Five).

Totnes and Dartington, currently struggling in the Premier Division, take on WBB (Division Four), who will have nothing to lose in this fixture. The same applies to Kingsbridge and Kellaton United (Division Five), who travel to the Rec to play Newton Abbot Spurs 2nds.

Division One side Watcombe Wanderers will have to fill up their cars for the trip to Elburton Villa 2nds (Premier Division) in what should be a good game.

Buckfastleigh Rangers (Division One) host Premier Division Plymouth True Blues at the Duckspond, while Division One leaders Paignton Villa travel to the top of the Premier Division to face cup holders Lakeside Athletic, hoping to achieve what no other team has managed this season – beat them!

Among the ties not involving Premier Division sides, there is an all-Division One clash at Babbacombe Corries, where Mount Gould are the visitors.

Liverton United (Division Two) host Windmill (Division Four), who are appearing in this competition for the first time.

The cup round would not be complete without a local derby, and Division Three side Ipplepen Athletic 2nds host Division Five outfit Broadhempston United, with both clubs hoping to enjoy a cup run into the New Year.

The final fixture is another fairly local derby in the west, where Bere Alston United 2nds (Division Four) host Tamerton Foliot (Division Five) in a game where the higher-ranked team may not necessarily be the favourites.

All cup games kick off at 2pm.

Good luck to all the teams competing in the Herald Cup, and enjoy your grassroots football!
