Charity golf day raises more than £5,000 for Citizens Advice Torbay

Charity day raises big money at Torquay Golf Club
More than 100 golfers helped raise over £5,000 for Citizens Advice Torbay at the charity’s first major golf fundraiser, held at Torquay Golf Club.
The Citizens Advice Torbay Charity Golf Day brought together golfers, local businesses and supporters for a day of competition, refreshments and fundraising.
One of the highlights came during the Beat the Professional competition when Torquay Golf Club member Jim Scott produced a spectacular hole-in-one.
The event concluded with a prizegiving ceremony hosted by acclaimed South Devon artist Becky Bettesworth, renowned for her vintage-style travel posters. Jimmy Ball, manager of Torquay United, also took part in the golf competition before announcing the winners of the day’s Silent Auction.
Citizens Advice Torbay paid tribute to the event’s sponsors, Tolchards, Switch, Devon County Windows and the Rotary Club of Torquay, as well as Torquay Golf Club and everyone who played or supported the event.
The money raised will help the charity safeguard its services and continue supporting local people facing difficult circumstances.
Citizens Advice Torbay is a local, independent charity which has been helping people across the area for more than 85 years. Each year, its team helps resolve more than 17,000 issues, covering areas including housing, debt, employment and family problems.
John Lowes, chair of Citizens Advice Torbay, said the fundraising event demonstrated the strength of community support for the charity.
He said: “It was wonderful to see our first major fundraising initiative in action. We brought businesses, sponsors, and the golfing community together for a great cause.”
He added that the funds would help the organisation recruit and train both new and existing volunteers.
With demand for its services continuing to grow while traditional sources of funding have reduced, Citizens Advice Torbay relies heavily on its dedicated volunteers, supported by a small team of specialist staff.
The successful golf day provided a welcome boost to the charity’s fundraising efforts while highlighting the vital support it continues to provide to people across Torbay.
