Wag and Joyce Rivers, a much-loved Paignton couple who spent decades running local pubs, have died just two days apart, leaving their family 'absolutely heartbroken'.

A Paignton couple whose pubs became much-loved meeting places for generations of locals have died within days of each other.

Wag and Joyce Rivers, who ran three pubs in the town at various times and supported dozens of local sports teams and social groups, will be remembered with a funeral service in Paignton early next month.

Joyce died on October 1 at the age of 93, and Wag two days later. He was 95.

One comment on social media read: “I doubt you will ever see such a formidable pair who were well-loved and above all well-respected all over the bay.”

The couple have been described as ‘legendary’ figures in the Torbay pub scene, having dedicated themselves to running traditional community ‘locals’.

Their first business was a grocery store in Hayes Road, which they ran from 1969 to 1979. They took on the Devonport Arms from 1979 to 1983, the Gerston from 1983 to 1986, the Waterside from 1986 to 1992 and the Devonport again until 2004.

The latter was honoured by the Campaign for Real Ale, and produced successful darts, pool, euchre, football and quiz teams.

The couple, who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2022, had four sons, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Son Colin said the family had been ‘absolutely heartbroken’ but felt a ‘deep sense of gratitude’.

“Mum was so widely known, loved, and incredibly popular within the community,” he said. “She lived life to the very fullest right up until the end.

“For 75 incredible years she shared her life with her soulmate, Wag. Together they were known as a legendary duo, showing us all what true love and devotion look like.

“For dad, it seems 75 years wasn't enough, and he simply couldn't let Mum have the final word or go on ahead without him.

“We’re full of sadness, but we can't help but smile knowing they are already reunited. No doubt Mum is already telling him off for being late!”

Both will be remembered at a funeral service at Paignton Parish Church on November 5 at 12 noon.
